Charging an Electric Bike

How much energy does an electric bike use? For the same penny or two it costs to keep a 100-150 W bulb burning for an evening in our home we can charge an electric bike that may propel us on a 10-15 mile ride! Of course the actual numbers vary with the specific bike, rider, riding conditions, cost of power etc. That said in many areas some riders find that they spend no more than $1 per month charging their bike.

The electric bike may thus be a rough equivalent of a 1,000 mpg automobile. (Please don't call us. We don't know where you can buy such a car).

Our electric bikes come with the charger included. It is a portable, small (2 x 4 x 7" or less), light (1 or 2 lb) and separate charger that plugs in between the "energy set" (the battery in its case) and the wall outlet. On most models the quick-release battery case can be charged on, as well as off the bike. The rate of charging varies between typically 1.5 and 2.0 A for specific makes/models. A full charge is typically obtained in 5 hours or less. The charger is 'smart' and shuts itself off. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) and Li-Ion (Lithium-Ion) batteries have no 'memory' and may be charged at any level of depletion, i.e. opportunity charged. To maximize longevity we recommend that the batteries are charged after each significant ride.
