Charging an Electric Bike

Giant Battery Charger

Giant Twist charger: 100-240VAC, 29.2VDC, 2.0A output, 2-1/4x4x8", about 1 lb

Electric Bikes Are Charged Like Your Cell Phone Or Power Tool

Our electric bikes come with a smart, portable charger. Plug it in between the wall socket and the 'energy set' (i.e. the battery in its case) as well as (on some models) into the bike itself. While charging a drained 9 or 10 Ah Li-Ion battery fully takes up to about 5 hours it is alternatively OK to 'opportunity' charge, i.e. partially within whatever shorter time available.

How much energy does an electric bike use? For the same penny or two it costs to keep a 100-150 W bulb burning for an evening in our home we can charge an electric bike battery that may propel us over a substantial and hilly distance! Of course the actual numbers vary with the specific bike, rider, riding conditions, type of bulb, cost of power etc. In Seattle—where 94% of the utility power coming from renewable sources—riders typically find that they spend less than $1 per month charging their bike.

The electric bike may thus be a rough equivalent of a 1,000 mpg automobile. Please don't call us, don't know where you can buy such a car.

Charging an electric bike is just as simple, easy and safe as charging your cell phone or power tool: Just plug in the charger between the bike's battery (on and/or off the bike depending on the model) and the wall outlet.
