About Electric Bikes NW

Our store is located in Seattle's Ballard area

"In Ballard where bicycle tires don't puncture,
drivers wait politely at each juncture,
tailwind perennially blows,
helmets don't flatten hairdos,
pavement is smooth and curbs made of foam:
Welcome to our store, where the ebikes roam!"

Our store strives to provide an unhurried, informative and enjoyable sales environment—albeit cluelessly devoid of creative marketing, confounding specials, canned sales talk, cheesy promotions and free trinkets.

Our Company

Established in 1996 Electric Vehicles Northwest, Inc has evolved into two entities:

Electric Bikes Northwest
and
Folding Bikes West

While having electric drive system background we are above all life long cyclists. Our electric bikes are designed to be as bicycle akin as possible and appeal to those who love bicycle riding and regard agreeable pedaling as a pleasure not a chore. Our focus is on the highly efficient and intuitive pedal activated design. The only electric vehicle we sell and service is the electric assisted bicycle. We sell and install kits only selectively and do not sell or service trikes.

We are grateful for the opportunities over the years to work with leading manufacturers and hope to continue to assist in bringing highly accomplished bikes—be they electric or non-electric folding bikes—to the U.S. market.

Products and Services

Human Power-augmented or Electric-assisted Bikes

We are not an electric vehicle shop or even a light electric vehicle shop. We sell only electric bicycles, which comply with the definitions of 'electric-assisted bicycle' or 'motorized bicycle' by state and federal laws. These bikes are as much about bicycling and human power augmentation as about electric propulsion. Our focus is on the highly efficient and intuitive pedal-activated models. One of the most fascinating and promising areas to us is to develop vehicles built with human power as an integral design component. In our view an electric bike must ride and handle like a pedal-only bicycle (be it unavoidably heavier), including being conducive to agreeable pedaling also in power-off mode.

Folding Bikes

The high end folders we offer are marvels of predictable, quick foldability but equally so of crisp ridability. Some of our customers (and us) bought their folders as much for how they ride and look. Our folders suit a wide range of riders and rides: Some of our customers ride a few urban miles, while others tour Africa, Latin America, the U.S. and Europe.

Push Scooters

There may be times when a mode between biking and walking may be needed or at least desired. Be that as it may riding and owning a highly accomplished, made in the U.S.A push scooter can be a unique and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Product Support, Service and Parts

If you bought your bike from us you can count on us to support it well. Our Seattle service department (established in 1996) is committed to supporting the owners of the bikes they bought from us with advice, service, repairs and parts and to do so promptly, flexibly and affordably.

Shipping

We do not ship phone and email order bikes. However, if you come in and buy a bike in our store and need it to be shipped we shall be glad to handle.

Seattle Staff

David HawkinsDavid Hawkins is our well experienced service manager and highly skilled lead mechanic without whom our level of tech support would not be possible. His knowledge of bicycles is encyclopedic. David is also the inventor of the Brake Director. How he gets to work: Riding his hilly, 5 miles Seattle commute on either one of his high end road bikes or on his electric one.

Gary ColsonGary Colson handles, among other tasks, bike assembly and tune ups. Bike assembly is not an entry level job: Only a bike well assembled by an experienced and meticulous technician is safe, enjoyable and durable to ride. How Gary gets to work: On his 14 mile commute from Edmonds alternating between his road, mountain, electric and motor bikes.

Eric Sundin Eric Sundin started Electric Bikes Northwest in 1996 and Folding Bikes West in 2004. His current tasks include product line development, sales and our web sites. While Eric writes and takes full responsibility ('The bike stops here!') for all web site content our company is privileged to have the long time services of Victor Munoz, a brilliant web master. How Eric gets to work: On a steeply hilly 3 mile Seattle commute alternating between his electric and folding bikes and occasionally walking.

Cara Keenan, accountant, and Kathy Stenger, administrative assistant, are displaying commendable and prudent reserve about being mentioned on this page. Photos are omitted as Cara and Kathy do not want to run the risk of being recognized as someone affiliated with the quaint pursuit of hawking vehicles with less than four wheels. How they get to work: Driving their gleaming SUVs (well, Cara's is not so gleaming). Diversity is Strength, we hope.

Local News

November 2009: Mike McGinn, was elected Mayor of Seattle, despite riding an electric bike. And Joe Mallahan, his challenger, was gentleman enough not to bring up this idiosyncrasy in the campaign.
