Human Power Augmented a.k.a electric bikes are above all about enjoying the appropriate, individual level of exercise. The design near-miraculously augments (rather than replaces) human power at any level of riding, i.e. whether we are fit, light and strong or not yet fit, light or strong. It encourages us to go riding (and to enthusiastically keep on riding) when our pedal-only bicycle may largely collect dust.
The electric bike is egalitarian: If the rider is willing to pedal lightly you will have the help of a strong, silent and loyal partner. Words, or at least not ours, can not fully describe the feeling of elation from being jolted down the pathway on an electric bike. But if you know how it feels to swim with flippers, drive a car with power steering, walk up an escalator or on a moving sidewalk then you do have an idea of what it is like to ride an electric bike.
If we have let ourselves fall behind regarding healthy eating and exercise habits we are not alone. Here are some statistics about us Americans:
(Sources: BRAIN, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Wolf & Colditz, and National Institute of Diabetes & Kidney Disease).
With the introduction on the U.S. market of the electric bike the heavy trend can be reversed. The electric bike provides a safe, healthy, enjoyable, practical and often affordable means of getting back in shape. By riding a few times a week we quickly start to drop weight and keep it off. As with indulging on food and sitting around, the electric bike experience quickly perpetuates itself. Instead we eagerly look forward to our next ride, and miss the experience on those days when we may not be able to fit in a ride.
