While it has indeed been a longstanding (albeit changing) practice in the quality regular (i.e. pedal only) bike industry not to typically ship bikes direct to the retail customer the contrary practice has evolved in the embryonic electric bike trade.
Electric bikes—due to their size, weight and complexity—are obviously more susceptible to shipping damage and more involved to assemble and service than most regular bikes. It is hard to escape the conclusion that proliferating Internet offerings may largely be about pushing sales at the expense of the real world practical challenges and frustrations faced by many a customer after the bike carton lands on his or her doorsteps.
That said our own full service, brick and mortar stores have over the years successfully shipped many different electric bikes to a fair number of customers: In instances directly to some who proved as competent as our own mechanics and in other instances to those who have instead preferred to order a bike 'ready to ride right out of the carton'.
The crucial prerequisite for the successful receiving of a shipped bike is that it has been professionally built up and tuned and then repacked with the greatest care by the U.S. shipping dealer (as bikes do not arrive to our shores ready to ride and the packaging that suffices while within the ocean container usually proves inadequate for domestic shipping).
Our own shipping experience since 1996 clearly tells the story that for bicycles to ship successfully direct to a retail customer this must be arranged on a case by case basis. We routinely explore with the prospective customer how willing he or she may be to deal with the risk of shipping damage, how capable he or she is to assemble, tune and adjust the bike to assure safety, maximize longevity and rider enjoyment, how the manufacturers warranty may be activated, and what the availability may be of competent, committed, ongoing support (local and long distance).
