For many riders on many rides an electric bike does not expend more energy than a light bulb in your living room. As presumably your home is lit up by numerous light bulbs and you probably also use kitchen appliances, washer, hair dryer, power tools etc charging your bike adds but a mere fraction to your utility bill.
If you live where your utility largely provides hydro power you are also of course getting around without adding noticably to global warming gases.
Otherwise due to its modest energy use the electric bike is obviously ideal for solar (PV = photovoltaics) charging. While a bike-mounted (or trailered system) rarely provides adequate output a modest stationary system does. Even in rainy Seattle we can typically recharge several bikes during a afternoon from our store system (100W panel, 40A storage battery and inverter). We traded an electric bike for our PV system from the competent and friendly folks at www.pugetsoundsolar.com.
