As electric-assisted bikes are new to the North American market test riding opportunities are obviously limited. Is a test ride crucial before buying? It depends, of course.
Ideally the prospective customer should visit an electric bike shop, test ride and compare. In Seattle our store is located amongst several excellent rides, including the Burke-Gilman bike trail and some moderate as well as very steep neighborhood hills. Our Oceanside, CA store is located just up from the beach and next to the new coastal bike trail. We encourage prospective customers to take the time they need (come back once, come back twice) for test riding and to specifically ride on those of our adjacent hills which approximate their own hills.
Since 1996 we have routinely shipped electric bikes throughout the U.S. We may like to think that this is because such customers prefer to do business with us but the main reason is of course that there are very few brick-and-mortar shops in the U.S.—sofar. That said we cannot recall an instance when a bike purchased has not met the customer's reasonable expectations—provided that time was spent talking to us about what level of rider the customer is, the intended use (distance, hills etc) and her or his specific expectations. If you have the time to call we have the time to talk to you. Your call will be answered by someone with extensive electric bike experience, who also rides enthusiastically him or her self. You have our promise: If we have doubts that an electric bike shall work well for you, we'll tell you so.
